Summer in Japan: Top 5 Destinations in Japan to Escape the Summer Heat

The cooling mountainous regions of Japan beckons locals and tourists alike for a cool respite from the summer heat.

Summer in Japan can be intense, especially in metropolitan areas where temperatures often exceed 30°C, and the high humidity makes even the simple act of breathing seem like a chore.

While the summer heat can be cruel, this season offers great opportunities to explore some of Japan's coolest destinations for a short getaway. Here, we will be introducing the top five destinations in Japan to escape summer heat.

1. Hokkaido (北海道)

Rishiri, Hokkaido in SummerCycle around Rishiri Island, an island located southwest of Cape Soya, the northernmost tip of Japan, and take in the stunning scenery of Mount Rishiri. | Photo by photoAC

Situated in the northernmost reaches of Japan, the expansive lands of Hokkaido (北海道) offer refreshing summer temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C, sometimes even dropping to 10°C at night and in the early morning. This makes it one of the most sought-after destinations during Japan’s grueling summers.

With no rainy season, you can also expect to enjoy a memorable summer getaway in a climate characterised by low humidity.

Known for its majestic wilderness and breathtaking sceneries, Hokkaido presents endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. Some suggestions include:

  • Hiking up Mount Asahidake (旭岳) in Daisetsu National Park (大雪山国立公園);
  • Cycling around Rishiri Island (利尻島) located southwest of Cape Soya (宗谷岬);
  • Hopping on a leisurely boat ride at Lake Toya (洞爺湖);
  • Kayaking along the Sea of Okhotsk (オホーツク海) in Eastern Hokkaido

In addition to visiting the delightful coastal towns of Otaru (小樽) and Hakodate (函館), summer is also the ideal time to enjoy the stunning blooms in Furano (富良野) and Biei (美瑛).

From mid-July to early August, visit the picturesque lavender fields at Farm Tomita (ファーム富田) and catch the flowers in full bloom against the Tokachi Mountain Range (十勝連峰). Hop on the Furano-Biei Norokko Train (美瑛・富良野ノロッコ号), connecting Asahikawa (旭川) and Furano, and be greeted with the floral spectacle along with the pleasant countryside breeze.

Wine enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the Furano Winery (ふらのワイン工場), which has been producing local wine since 1972. Open to the public with free wine tasting, it’s the perfect place to create summer memories while sipping delicious wine against a backdrop of vibrant purple lavender fields.

2. Aomori (青森)

Oirase StreamThe mystical Oirase Stream. | Photo by photoAC

Aomori (青森), which lies in the northern Tohoku Region (東北), is next on the list. With attractions like the pristine waters of Lake Towada (十和田湖), and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakami Sanchi (白神山地), Aomori is a place where you can experience more than just a cool respite from the summer heat.

Enjoy a refreshing hike through Shirakami Sanchi, which spans Aomori and Akita (秋田), and is home to one of the world’s largest primeval beech forests. As you hike, catch a glimpse of the Aoike Pond (青池), famous for its striking cobalt blue waters.

Immerse yourself in the tranquil, untouched nature of Oirase Gorge (奥入瀬渓流) as you hop on the trail bringing you through the captivating nature unique to Aomori, featuring vibrant foliage and majestic waterfalls.

In addition to Aomori's stunning natural landscapes, the city of Hirosaki (弘前) in Aomori offers a charming summer retreat rich in cultural heritage.

Be sure to check out the Hirosaki Neputa Festival (弘前ねぷた祭り) in early August, featuring giant illuminated floats being paraded through the streets, often accompanied by traditional music and dance, providing an immersive experience of Japan’s vibrant cultural traditions.

In addition, Hirosaki City is also packed with historical sites such as Hirosaki Castle (弘前城), Hirosaki Samurai District (仲町武家屋敷) home to the samurai serving the Tsugaru Clan, as well as the Sannai Maruyama Historical Site (三内丸山遺跡), one of Japan’s largest and most complete sites housing artifacts from the Jomon Period.

A blend of culture and nature, Aomori is a soothing destination to escape the merciless heat, enticing you to slow down and reconnect with yourself.

3. Toyama (富山)

MikurigaikeBring along a thin jacket when visiting the Tateyama Mountain Range. | Photo by photoAC

Home to the majestic Tateyama Mountain Range (立山連峰), Toyama (富山) offers an extraordinary alpine experience that takes you away from the summer heat and introduces a refreshing breath of mountain air during this season.

A stunning route that spans over 90km, the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (立山黒部アルペンルート) is an experience not to be missed. Running from April through November, the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route traverses Japan’s Northern Alps via a variety of transport, typically starting in Nagano (長野) and ending in Toyama, taking you through some of the most captivating mountainscapes Japan has to offer.

Summer in Toyama makes for the perfect hiking season, bringing you through the Kurobe Dam (黒部ダム) and Japan’s tallest waterfall, Shomyo Falls (称名滝). In Murodo (室堂), you can experience a moment of tranquility as surrounded by vast nature, enjoying the crisp mountain air as you hike around Mikurigaike (みくりが池).

Ainokura Village in Gokayama, near ShirakawagoThe village of Ainokura in Gokayama, another UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Toyama. | Photo by photoAC

Instead of visiting the often overhyped Shirakawago (白川郷), consider a trip to another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gokayama (五箇山), to experience the historical charm that Toyama has to offer.

Gokayama is one of the few places in Japan where you can see gassho-zukuri (合掌造り), literally translating to ‘hands in prayer’. Many of the centuries-old farmhouses found here date back to the Edo Period.

Explore Ainokura (相倉), the largest village in Gokayama, boasting nearly 20 gassho-zukuri farmhouses. You can also get a panoramic view of the village by taking a walk up to the viewpoint above the village. If you have time to spare, spend a night in one of these farmhouses, refashioned into minshuku (民宿), for an unforgettable experience.

4. Nagano (長野)

Shiraito Falls in Karuizawa, NaganoLiterally translates to ‘the waterfall of white threads’, Shiraito boasts 70m wide in length, offering the most gorgeous vistas in summer when it is surrounded by lush greenery. | Photo by photoAC

Located right next to Toyama, Nagano (長野) has long been recognised as a popular summer retreat thanks to its cooling temperatures. Among its many destinations, Karuizawa (軽井沢) stands out as a favorite spot to escape Japan's merciless summers.

For years, locals have flocked to Karuizawa for a touch of elegance. Karuizawa is a resort town featuring art galleries, classy restaurants, outlet malls, and beautiful waterfalls, such as the Shiraito Falls (白糸の滝). Visitors can also unwind by renting a bicycle to explore the streets of Kyu-Karuizawa (旧軽井沢), a former post town along the Nakasendo (中山道) Route that once connected the old capital of Kyoto to Edo, or present-day Tokyo.

KamikochiNestled in the Japan Alps lies Kamikochi, a spectacular work of nature beloved by both locals and tourists. | Photo by photoAC

Another destination not to be missed is Kamikochi (上高地), the breathtaking oasis nestled in the majestic Japan Alps (日本アルプス). Experience the fleeting beauty of summer while hiking through Kamikochi as you immerse yourself in the clear, transparent Azusa River (梓川) set against the backdrop of the towering Japan Alps and the bright blue sky.

With such a treasure, it is no wonder Nagano remains as one of the most beloved getaway destinations amongst locals and tourists alike.

5. Izu Peninsula (伊豆半島)

Jogasaki CoastJogasaki Coast, located on the eastern coast of Izu Peninsula, is a stunning stretch of coastline boasting impressive rock formations and rugged cliffs. | Photo by photoAC

Just a couple of hours away from Tokyo lies Izu Peninsula (伊豆半島), the ideal destination for a brief escape from the overbearing summer heat of the city.

With its rich history as a renowned beach and hot spring resort, the quaint retro town of Atami (熱海) offers a mild climate and serene beaches suitable for a family summer getaway. While soaking in hot springs might seem counterintuitive during the scorching summer, Atami’s beloved mineral-rich hot springs will be sure to rejuvenate you after a day of fun-filled activities!

Don’t miss the chance to explore Jogasaki Coast (城ヶ崎海岸), a picturesque stretch of coastline south of Ito (伊東) boasting rugged cliffs and impressive rock formations. Crossing the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge (門脇吊橋) takes you through a breathtaking series of views of the coastline and, on clear days, Oshima Island (大島).

Mount OmuroHop on Mount Omuro's chairlift to enjoy a full panoramic view of Izu Peninsula from the summit of the mountain. | Photo by photoAC

Moving away from the stunning beaches of the eastern coast and venturing deeper into the inland region, you'll encounter Mount Omuro (大室山), an extinct volcano adorned in lush greenery.

Take a chairlift to the volcano's summit and relish in the refreshing breeze while soaking in the panoramic vistas of the Izu Peninsula, and if luck is on your side, you might even be able to catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji (富士山)!
